What type of panel should I choose?

When it comes to building envelope, the constructors, designers and producers will usually come up with their own recommendations depending on their general knowledge of technical solutions. So then you might wonder which the most suitable envelopes for your building are.


To understand the reason behind the right solution, let us first analyze the building design principles:

Structural safety:

- stability, resistance;

- corrosion resistance.

Functionality:

- thermal insulation capacity;

- waterproof capacity;

- acoustic insulation capacity;

- fire resistance;

- architectural and technological functionality.

There are many types of envelopes on the market and all of them have advantages and disadvantages. However, the most used are:

For the roof:

- prefabricated “sandwich” panels with polyurethane foam (PUR or PIR);

- prefabricated “sandwich” panels with mineral wool;

- panel + mineral wool + waterproof membrane (designed on the construction site);

- panel + glass wool + metal panel (designed on the construction site).

For walls:

- prefabricated “sandwich” panels with polyurethane foam (PUR or PIR);

- prefabricated “sandwich” panels with mineral wool;

- panel + glass wool + metal panel (designed on the construction site);

- structural cases + wool (glass or mineral) + exterior metal panel (different types depending on the chosen design).

*Note: there is a wider variety of constructive solutions when it comes to building envelope; however, these are the most used.

“Sandwich” panel

- low assembling cost;

- low heat transfer coefficient;

- compatible with all accessories;

- low price due to great competition;

- fire resistance in case of PIR.



- high transportation cost due to large volume (approximately 500-700 sm per truck);

- due to its rigidity, when mounting on the metal structure, it could easily get strained and lose its tightness;

- due to temperature differences between the interior and the exterior of the building, the sheet metal can get detached from the foam;

- due to the mounting system, it may not form a uniform insulation on the entire surface of the building.



Mineral wool “sandwich” panel

- high fire resistance;

- low assembling cost.

- high transportation cost due to large volume;

- big weight (the structure of the warehouse is to be loaded additionally);

- higher heat transfer coefficient;

- due to the assembling type, it cannot form a uniform insulation on the entire surface of the building.



Panel + mineral wool + waterproof membrane

- high fire resistance;

- reduced roof pitch;

- easily made soffit;

- high life span and safety in exploitation;

- uniform insulation.



- big weight (the structure of the warehouse is to be loaded additionally);

- expensive assembling;

- higher heat transfer coefficient.

Panel + glass wool + metal panel

- high fire resistance;

- uniform insulation;

- compatible with all accessories;

- optimized transport.



- expensive specialized montage;

- medium heat transfer coefficient.

- due to the assembling type, it cannot form a uniform insulation on the entire surface of the building.



Panel + glass wool + exterior panel

- great fire resistance;

- uniform insulation;

- pleasant interior aspect;

- optimized transport;

- easy to fix/replace.



- high assembling cost;

- higher heat transfer coefficient.



Structural cases

- great fire resistance;

- pleasant interior aspect;

- optimized transport;

- does not require a secondary structure;

- compatible with a large variety of exterior architectural panels.



- expensive specialized assembling;

- medium heat transfer coefficient;

- limited by the distance between poles.





I am convinced we can find more advantages and disadvantages of the different types of building envelopes. But what I’d like to point out is the fact that when choosing the right one, one should put more thought into the matter and not treat it superficially.
